THE
DEMOCRACY MOVEMENT There
are now more than 120 DM branches throughout the UK, with more being
opened all the time. In
Bedfordshire the branch covers Bedford and the area to the south approximating
the Mid Bedfordshire parliamentary constituency. We have also occasionally
ventured into Milton Keynes. We need volunteers in the county to drop leaflets through letterboxes, so please contact us if you can help in your street or village. We are particularly short in the Shefford area. To
get involved, contact branch secretary Nicholas Marr on

Stop
the Cheques In December, Tony Blair went to a European Union summit in Brussels and agreed to a big increase in Britain's payments to the EU budget - from the current level of £3.5 billion a year, to over £6 billion a year. This is an astonishing £115 million every week, even taking into account the money we receive back from the EU in grants and subsidies. Blair agreed to this increase despite regular reports of EU fraud, despite failing to reform the EU's wasteful Common Agricultural Policy and despite the inability of auditors to approve the EU's accounts for 11 years running. So
the Democracy Movement has this month launched a new campaign against
this shocking waste of so much money.
Vision
Europe - moving beyond The seismic rejection of the EU Constitution by the French and Dutch peoples in their recent referendums has shown clearly that the EU's 'one-size-fits-all' model - whereby laws are made in Brussels and then imposed on 25 diverse countries regardless of what their voters want - is no longer viable. The diversity of the reasons for opposing the Constitution in these two countries and beyond has shown that different European peoples demand very different priorities from those who govern them. Crucially, the idea that more and more law-making powers should be concentrated in the hands of EU officials who cannot be democratically removed from office was firmly rebuffed. Today's
crisis presents Europeans with an opportunity to build a more realistic,
bottom-up way of interacting that enables co-operation but which also
respects Europe's diversity. If the EU cannot reform, then it must be
replaced. Vision Europe puts forward a constructive alternative.
EU corruption and the related issue of the EU's lack of respect for basic civil liberties are highlighted in the DM's campaign - Taking Liberties. Leaflets and posters highlight the case of the German journalist Hans-Martin Tillack - who was arrested on 19th March on the orders of the EU's anti-fraud office OLAF - and also set out some of the specific powers the EU Constitution would enshrine. Taking
Liberties intends to provoke voters into questioning whether
it is really in their interests for yet more power to be transferred
to the EU.
Human
rights do not apply - 5 steps to an EU Police State 'Human
Rights do not Apply' is a campaign launched by a coalition of groups
to highlight the threat of the developing EU Police State. The Democracy
Movement has teamed up with Labour for Civil Liberties, Youth for a
Free Europe and The Ecologist magazine to produce new leaflets and other
campaign materials for nation-wide distribution through the participating
groups' networks. Among the '5 steps to an EU Police State' exposed
by the campaign is the creation of an EU Police force, Europol, whose
agents have been granted immunity from criminal prosecution.
