The DM's Hall of Hypocrisy exists to name and shame MPs who have either indicated that they intend to approve the EU budget deal when it comes before Parliament, or have failed to confirm that they will vote against it. That deal, agreed by Tony Blair in December 2005, pledges an extra £2.5bn a year to the EU - a 63% increase - taking Britain's total (net) annual contribution to £6bn a year. That
would be £115 million every week being paid to the EU, even
taking into account the grants and subsidies we receive back - a completely
unjustified 'reward' for twelve successive years of the EU failing to
get its accounts approved by auditors.
There is no justification for handing the EU 63% more money while not even EU auditors can certify how the "majority" of the billions we are already paying are being spent - and haven't been able to for twelve years in a row. MPs can't
have it both ways; to expect people to believe they are committed to improving
public services, while irresponsibly voting to waste of large amounts
of public money by handing it to an organisation like the EU.
MPs have earned their rank in our Hall of Hypocrisy through a formula that also takes into account both their majority and reports of cuts to local public services. Those MPs appearing at the top of the ranking have the unfortunate combination of;
These are the MPs who are being the most hypocritical, and whose jobs will be most threatened by a voter backlash against their approval of such an obvious waste of large amounts of public money while essential local services suffer. Those MPs not appearing in our Hall of Hypocrisy have indicated either in letters to DM supporters or through votes in Parliament that they intend to oppose the EU budget deal. Up until the final vote in Parliament, an MP's rank is not permanent. They can drop out of the Hall of Hypocrisy instantly by confirming that they will vote against the EU budget deal. They
can also move up the ranking, if there is news from their constituencies
of problems in local services being caused by shortages of public money.
The final ranking of MPs will be cast by the vote in Parliament on the forthcoming European Communities (Finance) Bill, which will formally authorise our increased payments. This Bill is expect to be announced in the Queen's Speech on 6th November 2007 and to be presented to Parliament shortly afterwards. The final version of the Hall of Hypocrisy will then stand until at least the next general election, and will prove a powerful tool for any political opponents of those MPs listed who wish to demonstrate the MP's irresponsibility with scarce public resources, and the consequent effect on local public services. The Democracy Movement has also pledged to promote MPs' votes on the EU budget deal as an information service to voters in the most marginal constituencies during the next general election campaign.
The last time the DM ran such a non-party information campaign for voters was during the 2001 general election. Through the distribution of hundreds of thousands of newspaper-style leaflets in marginal constituencies, the campaign publicised the views on joining the euro of MPs of all parties. The campaign was seen to have been highly influential in causing more than a dozen pro-euro MPs to lose their seats, and in increased swings against pro-euro MPs and candidates in many other constituencies.
