DM launches EU Constitution referendum campaign
10th July 2004

EU corruption and the related issue of the EU's lack of respect for basic civil liberties will provide the entry point into the Democracy Movement's major new campaign - Taking Liberties.

Brand new leaflets and posters highlight the case of the German journalist Hans-Martin Tillack, who was arrested on 19th March on the orders of the EU's anti-fraud office OLAF. Herr Tillack, who was investigating EU fraud, was taken into custody and his personal papers, computer and archives confiscated in an effort to identify his sources for revelations about EU corruption.

Taking Liberties sets out some of the specific powers the EU Constitution will enshrine and intends to provoke voters into questioning whether it is really in their interests for yet more power to be transferred to the EU.

DM campaign director Marc Glendening comments:

"The EU Constitution will centralise more authority with institutions in Brussels that are not properly accountable.

"Taking Liberties will emphasise that being opposed to the Constitution is the real pro-European position, as it is in the interests of Europe's ordinary citizens that law-making powers be decentralised back to elected parliaments and governments."

Activists set up stalls in shopping centres and country fairs and started distributing the new leaflet nation-wide on Saturday
10th July. One million households will receive a copy over the summer in this first phase of the campaign for a 'no' vote in the EU Constitution referendum.
