THE DEMOCRACY MOVEMENT IN SOUTHEAST SUSSEX NEXT LOCAL EVENT: Thursday 22nd October 2009, 7:30pm Public meeting at the Best Western Lansdowne Hotel, King Edward's Parade, Eastbourne Speakers: Bryan Smalley - retired submarine commander & independent anti-EU researcher. There are now more than 120 branches throughout the UK and the branch which covers SouthEast Sussex is now one of the largest and most successful in the country. This branch covers the same areas as the Parliamentary constituencies of Eastbourne, Bexhill & Battle and Hastings & Rye, but also the towns of Polegate within the Lewes constituency, and Hawkhurst within the Maidstone & Weald constituency. The branch produces regular bi-monthly news bulletins of local and national news (usually at least four pages of A4) and all locally registered members receive their copies, either through the post or, if preferred, by e-mail. WHO ELSE CAN JOIN? The branch welcomes applications, not only from those who are still resident, but also from those persons who used to live in the part of East Sussex and who may have moved or emigrated, but still have affection for 'good old Sussex by the sea'. Membership of the local group, which is affiliated to the national Democracy Movement, costs a minimum of £6 per person annually for all UK residents (and overseas residents who agree to receive regular bulletins by e-mail). For those living overseas who wish to receive regular bulletins by airmail, the minimum subscription is £9. Featuring a picture on the front of jubiliant 'No' campaigners after Ireland's Lisbon Treaty referendum, this new campaign leaflet leads with the question; What part of 'No' doesn't the EU understand? The French and Dutch peoples also rejected the "substantially equivalent" EU Constitution in referendums and polls show a large majority of the British people would have too. Had our government and the Liberal Democrats kept their election promises to hold a public vote. Yet the European Union is still trying to side-step the people's verdict and transform itself into your government. The Lisbon Treaty and the reaction to the Irish 'No' vote show that EU is stuck in the past and incapable of reform, even when people overwhelmingly reject centralising more decision-making in its undemocratic institutions. The Break Free campaign sets out the main failings of today's EU, together with the benefits of major change. Its main theme is that it's time for Europe's leaders to drop the top-down EU state idea and to instead spend their time addressing today's challenges - rather than planning how to centralise ever more power in Brussels without democratic consent.
