23 June 2016, the Democracy Movement took a major step towards achieving our aims. The EU referendum on 23 June 2016 was the culmination of the Democracy Movement's campaigns since 1998 and we were one of the leading groups working independently for a Leave vote during the referendum.
Just one aspect of our activities, our campaign video promoted in the final days before the vote, achieved over 4.3 million views across various social media platforms. In addition, both our long-term slogan - Europe Yes, EU No - and the basis of our Stop the Cheques campaign, which contrasted the scale of funds paid daily to the EU with the financial needs of public services like the NHS - were adopted by the official EU referendum Leave campaign, Vote Leave. But our task isn't over yet. Today, the DM continues to work towards three remaining objectives:
|
Europe yes, EU no.
The Democracy Movement is an independent pressure group to defend liberal democracy in Britain and across Europe. We believe that this is being fundamentally undermined by the single currency and the European Union's broader drive to create a Brussels-based system of government, which is resulting in major decisions being taken centrally by undemocratic EU institutions.
Since Britain joined the EU, five treaties have increased its governing powers while our politicians have repeatedly promised reform. The EU has shown itself to be slow-moving, incompetent and, above all, undemocratic - a product of 1950s 'big is best' elitist thinking, now marooned in a smaller, faster moving world.
Today, pretending co-operation is the same thing as political centralisation is the fundamentally misleading and self-serving tactic of the EU's supporters. Yet it's perfectly possible for countries to work together on issues that affect us all without passing governing powers to EU institutions. As real internationalists and
true pro-Europeans, we support international co-operation and a Europe of democracies. EU-style political centralisation is only for outdated 'little Europeans' and euro-nationalists still clinging to outdated views.

The EU referendum was about much more than the minor changes David Cameron claimed to have achieved in his renegotiation.
It was a battle between two distinct visions for our country's future. A likely once in a generation opportunity to break our politicians out of their narrow obsession with a few declining countries on our doorstep and to show them what a truly democratic, international vision for Britain's future in the 21st century looks like.
Today, the majority of voters may have cast a clear verdict. But significant elements within our political system and beyond are refusing to accept the result, trying to put up legal barriers to Brexit, to add their own conditions to the delivery of the referendum result, or simply demanding a repeat referendum.
